Blast rips through NLMK oxygen unit, fire stops converter shop

MOSCOW, Aug 9 (PRIME) -- Russian steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) had to suspend work of its second converter shop due to an explosion and a fire that broke out in the oxygen distribution facility, an NLMK representative told PRIME on Monday.

“On August 9, at 10.00 a.m. local time, an explosion happened on the territory of NLMK’s oxygen unit. As a result, the building of the oxygen distribution facility was damaged and its roof caught fire,” the representative said.

“The fire was put out. There were no casualties. We are analyzing the reasons of the incident and evaluating its impact on production. Work of the second converter shop was suspended.”
